Aquaculturist
This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic team on a cutting-edge project that will use solar power to create sustainable oyster farming. Come grow with us. Solar Oysters (SO) LLC is looking for a candidate to assist in the further development of the Solar Oyster Production System (SOPS). The position requires working closely with Hoopers Island Oyster Company (HIOC), which is partnering with SO to bring this technology to market. The successful candidate will work on the SOPS prototype on Fishing Bay in coordination with HIOC personnel. An office is available in Cambridge, MD. This position will also be responsible for collecting, recording, reporting, and assessing SOPS’ performance and oyster growth data. This position would also assist with public outreach and education regarding the SOPS system. This is currently a part-time, contractual, position with growth potential.
Estimated Pay Range: $25/hr. - $30/hr.
Estimated Hours: 20 – 30/week.

Responsibilities Include:
- Assist in SOPS system build, deployment and operation
- Aid in maintaining and repairing equipment
- Develop standard operating procedures for SOPS
- Track oyster growth metrics and survival, inventory of oysters and gear, and environmental parameters of both the SOPS and adjacent cages
- Assist in collecting, recording, reporting, and analyzing data
- Assist with outreach/education and marketing SOPS
- Assist in identifying and pursuing grants
- Work safely and effectively in all types of weather in a marine environment
Desired Qualifications:
- Graduation from a standard high school or GED, college education preferred
- A valid driver’s license
- Ability to lift 50 to 75 lbs. repetitively
- Computer literacy - experience with spreadsheets, word processing, and database management
- Ability to clearly communicate, verbally and in writing, and to understand and follow directions
- Ability to work in a marine environment, on docks, piers, and boats
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with maintenance of equipment, including batteries, small electrical motors, pumps, water delivery systems, etc.
- Experience with shellfish aquaculture and biofouling prevention techniques
- Boating license or ability to get one
- Experience with biological data collection
